Tendonitis?

jeudi 28 décembre 2017

Hi there. 46yo here injured my right arm a couple months ago after a hard row machine wod. After the class my elbow area was burning painfully for hours. I'd never had any issues like this before that time.

Ever since then the pain has not gone away completely and limits what I can do to varying degrees depending on the exercises. I'd never had any problems before or any buildup to the problem so just expected it to heal.

I've discovered that certain activities cause it to flare up a lot, like anything row related, and wall balls. Oddly things like pullups usually don't bother it.

Took a week off over the Christmas week but didn't notice any significant healing, then last night at class we had ring rows as part of my first WOD back in action, and the pain in my forearm and bicep tendon area after class was bad all night even waking me up in the night.

I've been massaging it a lot with a muscle cream but today the pain is so bad it's hard to type at the computer for very long.

I've ordered tennis elbow braces today so hoping that will help. The most important question I have is if this is tendonitis or is it maybe a tear? What kind of doctor needs to be seen to know for sure?

Will it ever heal? How much time completely off would I need to give it to heal? Anything else I can do to assist healing and prevent it from getting worse without having to completely stop working out?

CF Liftoff - is it worth it?

vendredi 17 novembre 2017

So the liftoff is almost upon us but it is even worth doing it?

For myself i see no value add to my training schedule and my goals within CF. If and when i intend attempting a PR it will happen during my schedule.

The chance of winning anything is zero and the only real test of how you are compared to others is during the open, for example during 15.1

any comments?

Had Microdiscectomy 2 days ago...here we go

dimanche 5 novembre 2017

I've been doing CF for almost 9 years, first up in Canada (Toronto), and then moved to Austin, TX (about 2.5 years ago). Have had a bad back ever since I was young, about 2-3 months ago a disc herniation sent me to the doc. Turned out I had a disc extrusion, what it means is that "nucleus material of a disc seeps into the spinal column and potentially compresses a nerve"...in other words it sucks. This is my road to recovery.....more to come.

Starting tiny; does it still work?

mercredi 30 août 2017

I'm working towards opening an affiliate. I want to start very small just like the CF-L1 handbook details via Glassman'a starting model.

In your opinion, is this still viable in a day and age where CrossFit has matured and people expect a polished box bustling with members and equipment?

Shoulder flexability after surgery

dimanche 27 août 2017

I'm 48 years old and had shoulder surgery about a year and a half ago. Before surgery, I was pretty active in the gym but my right shoulder was nagging me. I injured it many time in the past 20+ years and finally decided to have it "fixed".
I had 2 tears, tendonitis and the bone shaved down. The doc said it was time. Well, I recovered ok. Progressed through rehab and then started back training slowly working around the injury. I slowly started to do more and more but still cannot do heavy back squats. Anything over say 95 lbs puts too much pressure or tension on my stiff shoulder. I've been doing every stretching exercise I can find online but nothing is loosening up my shoulder. I don't have the flexibility. Anybody have suggestions on how to loosen up my shoulder?

Personal WOD naming convention

samedi 5 août 2017

Hi, everyone. I use myWOD app for logging my data, but every time I do it my brain starting to heat up while trying to come up with a good WOD name. Like "WOD08042017" or "Row 5K". This makes all of my data kinda messed up, IMO. And that's because I don't have a system, obviously. Does anyone have a suggestion on that matter? How do you prefer to name your own WODs in the app? Thanks.

Floor scrubber/dryer machines

jeudi 13 juillet 2017

Hi everyone,
I've recently opened an affiliate in Kerry, Ireland.
We want to ensure our box is always clean for members and are finding that mopping and brushing our rubber floor tiles just isn't good enough to keep them clean and dirt free.
Our floor tiles are 1m x 1m 20mm thick. Just laid side by side with no adhesive.
http://ift.tt/2sU4s6P (SFW)
We're considering acquiring a scrubber/dryer (link attached SFW) to keep our floor clean and tidy and cut down on water use and time spent cleaning the floors.
http://ift.tt/2sUy1Fg

My questions:
- does anyone use these on this type of tiled floor?
- How do you find it?
- Are you worried about the scrubber/brushes wearing down the matting?
- Are you worried about excessive moisture getting into the tiles and between them?

Thanks very much in advance!

Overhead deadlift?

lundi 10 juillet 2017

http://ift.tt/2uH6mJb (wfs)

I am perplexed by this. I am a dentist, and a member of the Academy of General Dentists. The AGD puts out a magazine publication addressing any topic related to dentistry. This month's issue has an article entitled "Practice Dentistry Pain-Free: Preventing Physical and Financial Loss with Evidence-Based Strategies." The article condemns specific exercises used in Pilates, P90X, and CrossFit.

The link I'm sharing here requires a log-in, so you probably won't see the full article. Here are a couple exerpts:

Quote:

P90X and CrossFit are both fitness crazes that are popular today because of their brief 20- to 30-minute intense circuit-type workouts. The downside of these regimens is that if you aren't properly conditioned, you fatigue quickly, which leads to poor form and poor stability, which then leads to injury, frequently of the tendons.
That's worth discussion, but sounds like a description of poorly-scaled CrossFit.

Quote:

Of the CrossFit exercises, the overhead deadlift is the most unsafe exercise for dental professionals, as it is a ballistic movement with little stabilization that places heavy load on the upper trapezius and shoulder joint. Both areas are prone to injury in dental professionals.
Overhead deadlift? There is a little graphic with the article that shows a man at the bottom of an overhead squat using a barbell, and is labeled "Overhead deadlift."

The gist of the article is that muscles in imbalance due to posturing get tight or shortened. The article proposes that these muscles shouldn't be exercised under load; they should only be exercised by stretching without over-stretching. (Upper traps, delts, pecs, SCM, supraspinatus) However, stabilizing muscles should be strengthened with weight-bearing exercise (Lower traps, abdominal obliques, infraspinatus).

I feel like this article simultaneously over-simplifies to the point of untruth and complicates things beyond understanding. How do you exercise the lower trap without exercising the upper trap? Isolation exercises?

The author is a physical therapist (Dr. Bethany Valachi) whose husband is a dentist. While I do not doubt that she has helped many people, I feel there is still a long way to go in exercise education.

In an ideal world, my mind would have dentistry top-of-mind, and an understanding of exercise would be in there somewhere, secondary to my profession. My body, however, would first think that I am a CrossFitter, and secondarily anything else I want to do. See where I'm going with this? Why not train all the muscles in my body both in mobility and strength to withstand any task given, including the imbalanced posture of dental practice? Does this PT and CrossFit have the same goal, but disagree on how to arrive at that goal? Which method will be more effective?

Help with Deadlift Form

jeudi 6 juillet 2017

I have never been able to do deadlifts properly. I have very tight hamstrings that don't respond to stretching. My back is also not straight to begin with. I know people recommend Romanian deadlifts, but when I try them I can't keep my back straight and it just doesn't feel right. I found the trap bar at the gym today and made a video. Be thankful for any feedback. Thanks.

If it's a lost cause, I'll just continue not deadlifting.

Burpee Tightness

Hello,

Sorry if this has been asked; the search function didn’t help much. When doing burpees, and jumping my feet to my hands, I can only get my feet to jump about half way between where my feet jump from and my hands.

I am wondering whcih muslces may be short or tight and limiting my ability to jump my feet to my hands without breaking at the back.

Thank you!
