Wages + Membership + Perks for Coaches
mardi 11 décembre 2018
Hello,
I am curious what other box owners are doing for fair compensation of their coaches. I have heard boxes which do not pay their coaches, but credit their membership back to them after they work "x" amount of hours.
We pay our coaches an hourly wage.
Do you give your coaches a free membership + paid wage? Or do you give them a paid wage + discounted membership?
I am thinking of moving to a paid wage + free membership after "x" amount of hours because we do have some coaches that coach only a handful of hours per month.
Curious what others have been doing.
thanks!

? re Rogue Echo bike..pedal backwards?
mercredi 21 novembre 2018
Hello, thank you in advance for any input.
I am upgrading my old school airdyne for either the new Schwinn AD Pro or the Rogue Echo.
Does anyone know if you can pedal backwards on the Echo? If yes, does the monitor show output/calories/ etc?
On the AD Pro, you get the same resistance and readings when you pedal backwards or forwards. But I do not have access to an Echo to test it out.
Thanks again and happy holidays!

Pre diabetic NOT overweight and v active
dimanche 4 novembre 2018
Hi, I have looked for this but not found anything....My fasting blood glucose measures at pre diabetic levels most mornings (between 5.6 and 7.1) but not every morning - lowest it has measured is 4.9. I own a CrossFit gym, I train between 3 and 6 times a week, CrossFit workouts. I eat pretty well although over the last year or so I have slipped a bit and don't deny myself the odd cake, pastry or bar of chocolate. I don't drink alcohol ever. I am 5'5'' and weight 60kg. You can see my abs - I'm not boasting hahaha just pointing out that my body fat is low enough to see them. I have a doctor's apt for next week but just wondered if this was perhaps a common thing with CrossFitters.....My doc does NOT understand anything about CrossFit, indeed he is hugely overweight. Last time I went to see him saying everything I ate made me feel exhausted and dizzy, he told me to eat a banana....so I'm not holding out much hope for an explanation that fits.

Death by 10m - what's the world record?
samedi 27 octobre 2018
One of my favourite workouts since it's self-modulating, mostly includes the warmup, doesn't take any equipment except a watch, and hits most CFers right where it hurts since they don't like to run.
But what's the world record? What's even a really good score? The best I've ever managed was 15 iirc, and the most I ever saw was a senior person at Invictus who I think did something outrageous like 20-22 rounds, but that was 9-10 years ago and probably poorly measured.
Help?

Drop in Etiquette
mercredi 3 octobre 2018
I'm posting here since it seems like the most logical place. I'm happy to cross-post if it makes sense and is possible.
First of all, I'm a member, not a box owner. Keep that in mind when as I call attention to this.
When travelling we should assume that there is a drop-in fee. I have noticed in our box drop-ins who either assume or expect that there is no fee. I've seen them ask "is there a fee?" and occasionally, even when told, I've seen folks skip out on paying. Really?
I've dropped into a box once or twice and have never assumed that I could work out for free. I've either paid for the session, or where the box allows it, purchased a t-shirt. We all know what the monthly costs are for a member, why would we assume we would be exempt from a fee just because we're tourists.
What is particularly galling to me is that the majority of the culprits are fellow Americans. Come on guys! For better or for worse we're all tarred by the same brush outside the US (I live in Switzerland). Assuming a free service is bad enough (it's rude) skipping on the bill is criminal.
Happy to hear other views on this.

Rich or Mat?
vendredi 28 septembre 2018
Rich in his prime vs. Mat F now. Would be a good battle. Rich most of the time had some reserve in his tank blowing away the comp. Mat seems to demolish everyone. When they expose a weakness he comes back 10x's harder. Beat everyone by 200 points last year.
I am not the biggest fan of either but I totally respect their craft and how well they work the tools they have.
Once this thread fizzles out we can look into Annie, Katrin and Tia.

Reshaping the CrossFit Games from 2019 *****
vendredi 24 août 2018
https://morningchalkup.com/2018/08/2...rossfit-games/ WFS
What do you make of this??
I wonder if they have really thought this through. On top of that there is no mention of the masters yet TBD.
I think the games will wash out and the sanctioned events will be the ones to watch because thats where the best athletes will be to watch, and the prize money too.
This might be a business for CF but it is a living for many athletes.
No!!! i am not a big fan of this.

Shoulder Press and Bench Press Help needed
vendredi 29 juin 2018
I am pretty far behind the curve when it comes to strength in the shoulder press and bench press. I am looking for a program or methodology I can follow to help get them up to speed. Looking at Texas Method, or 5 3 1 they all have other lifts mixed in. I really only want to focus on bench and shoulders for a while and I am not sure the best way to tackle it. I have tried doing it 5 3 1 style, but it seems like waiting an entire week in between shoulder presses seems a bit long. I tried 5's on Mondays, 3's on Wed and the 1+ on Fridays, but I am not sure if that is right either.
I do Crossfit at a box regularly so this will be supplemental to that.
I have attached a screenshot form BTWB that shows my current level if it helps.

Insurance covering rope climbing
dimanche 13 mai 2018
If anybody is willing to refer me to some good insurance that covers rope climbing in their gym Insuranc please let me know.
I took over management for a gym, not a crossfit box....and they have k&k insurance. I am thinking of putting a rig in the parking lot to be able to have rock climbing and when I asked his insurance about this they said they cover no kind of climbing.
So we are looking for an insurance does cover this to switch over and we are also trying to find ways to protect ourselves the best way possible by having a Castro rig in the parking lot when the business is closed. We are worried about people walking by deciding to play around on it and I'm told that even with a sign and trying to make it non-usable during off hours that we can still get sued. So also any advice on that would be great. Thanks

I took an extended period of time away from CF due to an injury and some other things going on, so just want to make sure my form is dialed in before getting back into it. I have super long legs compared to my torso so squatting has always been difficult for me, but I've been working on it.

Chasing Excellence- quick question
mardi 1 mai 2018
I'm about half way through this book so far and really enjoy it. There is one question I have, though, that I have always wondered about. In the book, Bergeron mentions how Mat Fraser wasn't great at rowing, so once home from the games he bought one and rowed 3-5,000m every day. I know rowing and air dyne biking are considered eccentric-less movements so they don't necessarily interfere with recovery, but isn't it also true that doing such things in excess can have a negative effect on performance overall? Is this suggesting it's better to never have a day off? I also noticed he said Fraser would flip the pig for hours every Sunday at night time. Does a point of diminishing returns apply to anyone anymore? Certainly if I just went out to my garage gym and said I want to get better at squats so therefore I'm just going to do 1,000 reps of squats every single day, would NOT make me stronger at squats. I'm all for working very hard, training hard, and frequency in training, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how this type of stuff applies to most people. If one is willing to put forth similar effort, but their bodies aren't physically capable of doing that much, what is the problem exactly?

CCFT Level 3 - 2018
samedi 31 mars 2018
Hi everyone, I am preparing myself to pass the Level 3 in a month and I have seen that the Study Material has changed significantly in the last year. Many articles (mostly Mouvements and those of Dr Kilgore and T Leyland have been taken off the Study Material list).
For those having passed the test, do you think that taking the Online Course (Spot the flaw, Scaling and Anatomy) are a real help when preparing for the L3 (both content-wise and if the videos of the test are somehow similar to those of the L3)?
Last but not least, I've read that most memorising is needed. Could anyone underline which domain is recommended to be memorised?
Thanks for your help!

On Ramp Program
samedi 10 mars 2018
I need some advice on an on ramp program. For some reason, I'm not finding any threads for this subject and I can't imagine there are none. In preparation for opening a box, what do you suggest for an on ramp program as far as cost, what movements to teach (obviously the 9 foundational movements), length of time, and wods to program in. I've seen one box from researching in my area that has a foundation fee of however much, and the rest of the month is free after foundations are completed. I like this idea, but wonder if the cost would be too high and offsetting to newbies who aren't familiar with the community.
Thanks for any input!

Movement standard: Single Under vs Speed Skip or Running Man jump rope
vendredi 9 mars 2018
I'm looking for verification on movement standards for various jump rope movements.
Does this sound accurate/correct? Thanks in advance for feedback and input!
Single Under
The rope passes underneath the feet once per jump. Both feet touch the ground after the rope passes underneath.
Speed Step or Running man
Only one foot or the other touches the ground on each repetition, similar to footfalls in a running movement. This would NOT be considered a single under for competition purposes (like the CF Open), correct?

MRI CLEAR BUT Worsening Shoulder Pain in External Rotation
I am a 20 year old Javelin thrower just wondering if anyone else is having the same or similar issues?? It has been over a month now since I originally injured my shoulder whilst doing Javelin. Pain was manageable to begin with.. only effecting me when actually throwing but has worsened over the last 3 weeks or so! I now cant do any of my shoulder exercises through external rotation!!
I was sent off for an MRI by my sports doc and results have come back completely normal! I know thats a good thing in the long run... but I cant get past 90° shoulder rotation without 10/10 pain!! It respnds positively to the SLAP tear test... but nothing on the MRI!!

Is anyone participating in the Open, and what is your strategy for Open WOD 18.1....?
Also, do you think subbing Airdyne for C2 is a good option?

Advise on getting clients?

I opened a Box in my small town of six thousand people. There Is not another Box within 40 miles. I kept my overhead pretty low going in I knew I needed at least 22 members to break even. Ive been open for 6 months and Ive been stuck at 14 members for awhile. Every once in awhile I will gain 1 or 2 for a month or 2 but then they dont stick with it. I need help on what to do to get more people in the door.

C4 pre-workout explosive energy with creatine nitrate
jeudi 8 février 2018
Im sure its been discussed many times. What are you thoughts on C4 made by Cellucor? Many of my gym mates do this. Does it have any banned substances?
Would love to hear some of the chemist rule looker-up types chime in.
Cheers

Thoughts on new movement standards...
mercredi 24 janvier 2018
:welcome:I am interested in hearing peoples thoughts on some of the movement standards changing...
As Castro demoed the DB Snatch must reach eye level before changing hands and the burpee is now a 2-foot kickback/ forward to complete the standard.
I am not sold on the dumbbell change. Honestly, I do not see much of a difference in the movement. But for the burpee I can see this being a serious game changer! For smaller bodyweight/gymnastics guys like me I enjoy burpees in the sense I can do them fast. But when trying to keep a good pace the step up or back is vital for me keeping my HR down.
I hope CrossFit continues to evolve its movements so it can keep some overall uniformity in the competition setting.:thanx:

Ulnar Nerve Lesion
samedi 20 janvier 2018
Got a diagnosis of ulnar nerve snapping and lesion from orthopedic doctor. I get numbness in pinkie and ring finger with bent arm positions after 10-20 minutes.
General orthopedic doctor recommended surgery. Sent me to a hand specialist who said if the numbness is decreasing then surgery is not necessary, if it increases then he suggests surgery. Nerve test was unremarkable. Neither doctor recommended physical therapy. General orthopedic said it doesn't correct the problem.
I have a history of tendinosis in both elbows. I waited a year to get back to the gym, then increased loads 10 lbs per 2 weeks as recommended by orthopedic doctor. I did a workout with 150 lb bench press and felt tingling and pain in the elbows hours later. More tingling and pain followed for the next 3 months. Ultrasound showed "nerve" from the doctor's comments. Also had pain in the fingers for 2-3 months after massaging my tight shins.
I want to get back to the gym and did a lot of stretching and myofascial release work. Haven't tried nerve flossing yet. My form during my last gym 150 lb workout was sloppy. I started to do 10 sets of 10 pushup workouts at home with strict form where I twist arms into the floor on the way down and stretch floor sideways on the way up to make sure muscles are turned on. There is sometimes very subtle tingling the next day.
I want to avoid surgery and am looking for advice on avoiding tendon and nerve damage with increased intensity workouts. My orthopedic doctor said bench press with my condition should limit the range of motion, bar should stop around 5 inches from chest.
What other form tricks should be followed? What kind of routine should I follow? How many days a week, how many reps, sets per workout would be optimal to repair the damaged tendon?

Level II looking for a possiblities
vendredi 19 janvier 2018
Hello Everyone,
I am currently a Lvl II instructor with a lot of time coaching. I have over 10 years of active coaching in different areas and coming up on over 7 years of active CrossFit involvement. I was the senior coach at my first gym at and lead that for 2 1/2 years. Recently just moved back to MN from TX where I was also a senior coach for a year.
I moved back to start my own facility but after a few hiccups and some disagreements, my partner and I have decided to go different ways. This is unfortunate but also trying to look at this as a blessing in disguise. I have a lot of personal clientele that currently wants to use my services but lacks the space and availability to do most of it... for now.
Since things went sideways I have wondered what kind of opportunities are out there in the CrossFit world?!?! I recently applied for CrossFit 340 in the Virgin Islands and think that would be a really cool thing to do! I've only been to USVI once and I was very young. Getting a bit older I see how interesting that could be coaching there. I'm having a ton of searching coming up with places all over but wondering if I could limit the amount of back and forth I'm doing on searches:run: and see if anyone in here has, or knows of any opportunities for a Lvl II coach?
I've seen in the past people wanting to travel and coach. I'm seeing if I can fulfill 2 birds with one stone. I want to see what other communities are out there, how I can continue to learn as a coach, meet new people and make new friends, and see if opportunities continue to build.
If you have any questions for me personally feel free to ask!
Thanks:pepper:
