Best barbell for box use?

samedi 30 janvier 2016

Haven't had a good box-use barbell thread in a while. My box is looking to pick up a bunch of new barbells and my honest thought at this point is to buy one of each and try a bunch. I think for the right value, $300 is not too much to pay for a really nice bar that people will compete for. Here are my thoughts so far:

1) Rogue - solid construction although I don't love the new composite bushings. Seem a little sticky. The main thing about the Rogue bars is the oxide finish just plain looks like crap after a few months of box use. Black becomes gray or green and it seems like the finish is really inconsistent. I've seen some really old bars that seem to hold up some that discolor super early. I know it's a barbell and it's not a beauty contest but it's not like you have to pick between performance and durability... or perhaps you do?

2) AF - Klokov bar looks promising but mixed reviews (rust concerns) and it is at the TOP of the price range.

3) New nickel chrome from MDUSA... how is that holding up? Always dug the look and feel of those bars. Is the finish any good?

Any other decent chrome bars out there? Should we get a few different singles and see how it goes?

Help! Can't do any compound lifts for 4-6 weeks!

Due to a rib injury, I can't do any compound lifts for 4-6 weeks.

I usually do strength training 4 times a week, mostly centred around squats & deadlifts. All I can do now for 4-6 weeks is walking on the treadmill (with incline) and maybe the elliptical trainer. I guess this will force me to improve my endurance (which sucks).

How often and what sort of progressive endurance training should I do? High Intensity Interval Training with incline on treadmill?? Long & Steady cardio?? How many times a week and how long should the sessions be??

Thanks for your input!

Bicep tenodesis & Olympic lifts

mardi 26 janvier 2016

I am 8 weeks post bicep tenodesis, 47 years old and have been a cross fitting for 5 years. Shoulder feels good, I have almost all range of motion back and have started strengthening with bands. I am curious as to what I can expect at full recovery. Will cleans and snatches be limited? OHS and HSPU?

I understand that since the long head of the biceps is no longer attached to the labrum that I can expect decreased stability but am hopeful that by strengthening the rotator cuff muscles I can compensate.

Thanks in advance

Is there a true RX standard for wall ball target height?

lundi 25 janvier 2016

For the sake of simplicity, let's just refer to men's RX of 10'.

When I judge wall balls against an actual wall I require the middle of the ball to hit at or above a line marked at 10'. If anybody does this differently, please let me know.

However, a friend of mine competed at Regionals a few years ago, and he had to do wall balls against a mounted target like the ones made by Rogue. The middle of the target was placed at 10' and the diameter of the target itself is 16". For his wall ball to considered valid, all he had to do was to hit the target somewhere. If I'm not mistaken, then that means he could have had the top of his ball just skim or graze the bottom of the target and it would have counted.

So, getting back to the question in the title--is there actually a universal rule for target height?

I haven't reviewed any of the movement standard videos from the past Opens (although those can change from year to year), but do you recall how/if this is addressed?

Thanks!

Exertion Headache

Hi,

I know there are a few threads about this knocking aorund, but I was hoping for some information from anybody that has been through this.

I got my first one on Friday re-doing an old open WOD (I think it was 11.4) with 60 burpees, 30 OHS and 10 MU. During the OHS my left temple started throbbing really bad and I got this weird headache. I was fairly well hydrated, but feel this could have been due to excessive breath holding on the OHS creating too much pressure / tension.

I thought nothing of it and took the Sat off, but my head still felt a bit funny when I was driving around.

On Sunday I went in to train again and the same thing hit me when I tried a bear complex. I grit through one complex then moved on to the next part of the session...

100 burpees to 6" target, the headache returned after 15 burpees but when I switched to step down and up it kinda lessened.

I finished off with a snatch ladder and a 1 mile run and my head was okay so I felt semi cured.

However, this morning when I did some rowing intervals it returned and my head doesn't feel great atm!

I've booked in with the Dr on Wed am, but in the interim I was just hoping for so more information.

Thoughts /Questions

1. Hydration - this appears to be a common cause for some, but I tend to drink quite a lot of water each day and I don't think this is an issue

2. Pre-workout (MP Assault) - this has popped up a few times on the net but I've taken it before with no issues and have taken pre workout for over a year

3. Neck tension - I'm doing an egoscue course at the moment for my posture and get a sports massage every week, so although my neck / shoulders are tight, I don't think this could be the issue

4. Rest - normally I would bite the bullet and take some time off, however I've got a competition at the end of next month and I'm trying to peak my conditioning. Is it best to wait until the symptoms go before training again? How long does this typicaly take, I've heard it can take 3-4 weeks :(

Thanks

Power Ring Training Order

Hi Everyone;
I placed an order for a set of rings with Ring Traing on 1/8/16. I got an email confirmation of the order but no delivery estimate. I sent an email two days ago for an update but have yet to hear anything.
Does anyone have any recent experience with this company? I am located in the continental US.
I ordered with them because a set I previously ordered back in 2007 is still working well, yet I'm a little concerned about the lack of communication.
Thanks for any information.

CrossFit Open for Adaptive Athletes

Was casually following the Wodapalooza competition and noticed they had a few separate categories for adaptive athletes.

Shouldn't/couldn't CrossFit HQ begin considering the same thing? If not a separate class for the Open, then perhaps another vehicle entirely to get adaptive athletes to the CrossFit Games themselves?

Barbells for Boobs Prizes

lundi 18 janvier 2016

I bought two of these Orca Pink coolers at an auction. Reuctantly, I've decided to try and sell them as the wife has reminded me we have more than enough beer coolers at the house. These would be perfect for a Barbells for Boobs event with their bright pink color. Maybe fill them with Kill Cliff or Fit-Aid for participants, or fill with goodies for a prize or raffle.

These coolers retail for big bucks on the web sites, $270 for the 26 quart and $400 for the 58 quart.

The 26 quart dimensions are:
- Inside: 16.5" x 12.25" x 10"
- Outside: 23.75" x 17.5" x 14.75"

The 58 quart dimensions are:
- Inside is 18 1/2x12.3x13.37
- Outside is 27.2x19.57x18.75

Looking for $500 for both, or $225 for the 26 qt and $325 for the 58 quart.

I am located in the South Jersey / Philly area. Im willing to meet within a reasonable distance. Email me: kyle@crossfit-np.com

Athlete is basically doing a front-lever (toes-to-bar), how to correct?

YouTube Video (SFW)

Guy that works out with me (first one in the video) has a crazy toes-to-bar and nothing I say to him fixes it. I've told him to straighten his legs, but he's determined to do damn near a front lever then tap the bar. Sometimes he even smashes his shins into the bar because he's so parallel with the ground.
Thoughts? Coaching tips? Cues?

In the linked video are 7 of his reps near the start of the Open 14.4 workout, and then 5 of my reps completely cold, just walked into the gym to add a clip.

He's a shorter athlete with a powerlifting background, if that makes any difference.

Butt wink, vertical torso foot stance and femur length

i'm wondering if anyone has experimented with this or knows anything about this.

i know the Mobility WOD SOP of braced neutral spine.
I know about the knees out cue.
which is all well and good.

but i'm wondering if the width of your stance relative to trying to keep vertical (which logically directly affects buttwink) affects buttwink.

by this, i mean, i notice ppl who got butt wink amongst my training population all have narrow stances, which isn't a problem in of itself, except the taller they are (or more accurately the longer their femurs) the more pronounced their buttwink, in this narrow position.

so i'm wondering (before i try anything) if anyone else has suggested widening their squat stance and successfully got rid of buttwink.

i appreciate this is a real beginners question, i'm just curious to find out other, more experienced trainers/coaches insights into this.

Shoulder Issue

4 weeks ago, we were doing ring muscle ups as part of a WoD. After my first MU, my left shoulder muscles ached a bit; felt like they cramped up. I stretched and rolled out certain areas and it felt ok. After my second MU, I had the same feeling. Again, I stretched and rolled the muscles out a bit and did not continue to do any MUs. The WoD also included HSPUs. I attempted a few and my shoulder started to ache. I stopped all pushing movements for that day. Over the next week, I was having trouble getting into the rack position with cleans and felt the ache on the descent with presses (at about forehead level). At that point, I ceased all pressing movements through today.

I was evaluated by a sports trainer who determined that I probably overloaded the muscles of and around my shoulder (rotator cuff, bicep and tricep). It was clearly evident that these muscles (teres minor, infra, supra and subscap) were extremely tight and inflamed. Over the next 2 weeks, we worked on mobility through very deep massage and active release of the muscles, light shoulder rehab movements, and heat (little to no ice ala KStarr). I regained nearly complete mobility in all directions, except for some discomfort in certain positions. My strength is there, but not 100%.

Here's what remains: if I move my arm across my body at shoulder height and then press it in with my right hand (as in a tricep/shoulder stretch), I feel discomfort in the area where the short head of the bicep and the pectoralis connect to the shoulder - right below the deltoid. And a little discomfort in what I believe is the infraspinatus or even the short head of the tricep. If I press with weight, I feel some discomfort in the same areas.

Also, when I have my arm down by my side and then rotate my hand clockwise (so that my palm faces rear then outward), I feel a clicking in my shoulder in the deltoid area, but no pain.

I decided to have an ortho take a look. X-Rays were fine, and he was happy with my mobility and strength. However, due to the discomfort, he suggested I get an MRI if (he said big IF) I don't see a real improvement in 2 weeks. I don't want to have an MRI. I'm highly claustrophobic.

I do have a good rehab program, and the deep massage and release (although painful) seems to be working. I just want to see if anyone had a similar issue and can share their rehab experience, and see if you have any advice for building up strength and stability in order to get back to muscle ups.

Thanks in advance.

I was wondering if anyone has any of the original or older CrossFit shirts that they don't wear any more (pre Reebok) in either a girls size or small male.

Great Gyms visited

I try to go to gyms both out of town and local. Where have you visited or where do you go and what do you like about it?

I am a member of Crossfit Santee near San Diego. I really love the owners 7 of them and they offer open gym all of the time. They gave me a key and don't charge me. I also have all of my gear available for them to use.. plenty of it. We put on a Games nite that promotes myself, the gym and some really great local talent. My coach is one of the owners and travels with me to the big events. Everyone is nice and its a fun atmosphere to work out in. We have some regional athletes Roy Voss and Dani Sidell who push me. I have tried a few other local gyms with no success.. this place is my home.

I have been to Invictus and it was nice but lacked some of that personal love. Its a brand and has a huge following but I prefer my gym.

Went to workout at CF Chalk with Ryan Fisher. One of the nicest guys and gyms. Even had a chance to workout with him giving me pointers then a workout with him having dubs and 12" deficit hs push ups.

On Monday had the pleasure of working out at CF Belltown in Seattle. I heard from another gym owner that they were not personable. But could not have been further from the truth. Heck the guy offered both me and my girlfriend a Cappuccino and later a shot. He was a funny dude. The place is hard to describe, part saloon, dart board, bar area, leather chairs, locker rooms have a separate stool for each person.. big place but every inch of the place was sorted out and had a purpose. Owner was super nice, funny and really into it. Long warm up and he was motivated to teach each and every last one of us.

I might have worked out in 15-20 gyms and if I lived in Seattle this would be my home. Hats off to my travel gym CF Belltown.

Tell us about your gym and your favorite travel gym?

I haven't looked at the mainsite exercises and demos for a while. I was going to direct some newer Crossfitters there because it used to be one of the best resources around. Now it just has a few foundational movements and it looks like everything is gone.

Does anyone know if they took down all of those videos or are they archived somewhere?

Community transparency? Necessary?

lundi 4 janvier 2016

A friend of mine used to own a box but broke away from the partnership. He still receives calls from the city that the current box owner is grossly overdue with utility payments, etc and has tax liens on the property; however, the box continually markets to other affiliate owners on how to grow, etc.

From an outsider's perspective, it's completely unethical but I suppose I only know one side of the story.

I don't really plan on saying anything; I just can't get my mind off it for some reason.

Just looking for opinions if anyone is willing to offer them. :)

Thanks and happy new year!:)

Rogue Chan Bar

I was stuck between the CHAN BAR & OHIO POWER BAR.
For my reasons alone i personally like the center knurl & wider none-knurl of the CHAN BAR ( for deadlifts ) along with the dual marks on the bar compared to the OHIO POWER BAR.

I think the CHAN BAR is an all-around bar for me.
I have read many reviews and looked into what type of training i will be doing ( Powerlifts, Oly-Lifts, CrossFit ).

The topic here is i don't care for Black-Zinc coating so i contacted ROGUE FITNESS and learned that you can order this bar in BARE-STEEL like the OHIO POWER BAR, Done deal order in cart!

Bill-

Any time frame when the Rogue Monster-Lite Yoke will be available to order?
Or if any available ( Used ) from the 2015 Crossfit-Games?

It had the red-crossmembers, looks to be Monster-Lite w/ smaller hardware.

Not interested in Y-Series or Monster-Series. Monster-Lite comes in at that price point that won't break the bank and allow for more Rogue gear in the near future.

This will be the cornerstone to my Home-Gym! besides HG Bumpers, Chan-Bar, SR-1 speed-ropes, Sandbag, Slam-Ball, Games-Box, Ballistic-Block & SISU War-Hammer.
